about

Symphony no. 1, in four movements, was recorded in November 2019 by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by John Roger Walton.

The first movement (Largo spazioso) depicts vast, melancholic, lyrical atmospheres punctuated by contrasting, dramatic, sometimes upsetting sections. Even when the music gets back to the calmness of the beginning, those contradictions are not entirely solved, leaving room for further emotional development over the following movements.

The second movement (Allegretto) acts as a playful intermezzo to the earlier narration. The orchestral families play the lively theme in various combinations following the classical structure of a fugue.

The third movement (Andante) is the Symphony’s lyrical core. Melodic lines weave together over a lament-style bass motion, telling stories of fall and rebirth, hope and despair. The dramatic development is interrupted by the sudden disruptive gesture of the first movement. The final movement (Con moto) finally settles all the emotional contradictions by joining a joyful, majestic theme to the themes presented earlier. The Symphony ends with a statement of optimism and resilience: even the most upsetting feelings can be sublimated into the grandness and force of music.
